Most dyslexic people don't see letters moving. That's the myth — the cartoon version that gets passed around. The real experience is harder to name and harder to argue with: reading costs something. A paragraph that takes someone else thirty seconds takes you three minutes. At the end of it you're not sure you retained it, and you're tired in a way that's difficult to explain to someone for whom words just land.
School saw that gap and drew a conclusion. The reading group they put you in. The look on a teacher's face when you stumbled through a passage aloud. The classmate who finished three pages while you were still on the first paragraph. The quiet, incremental accumulation of evidence that something about you was broken.
You developed workarounds. Memorising what words looked like rather than sounding them out. Reading ahead the night before so you'd never have to do it in public. Choosing subjects where reading mattered less. Building an identity around the things you were undeniably good at, and quietly walking away from everything that required going through a page of text to get there.
Somewhere in there, “I read slowly” became “I am slow.” That translation happened so gradually you probably didn't notice it. And once it settled in, it didn't stay in the reading corner — it spread. Into what you thought you were capable of. Into which rooms you walked into and which ones you assumed weren't for you.

What your brain is actually doing
Dyslexia is a difference in phonological processing — the part of the brain that connects written symbols to sounds. For most people, reading becomes automatic over time: see word, word arrives. For dyslexic brains, that automaticity doesn't fully develop in the same way. Every sentence involves more deliberate effort. That's the cost.
What the school report didn't mention is what gets built instead.
Brains that route language differently tend to construct stronger alternative routes. Dyslexic people consistently show elevated ability in spatial reasoning — the capacity to rotate and manipulate three-dimensional objects mentally, to see how things fit together in space. In narrative reasoning — understanding how events connect, what's missing from a story, what the structure underneath the surface is. In big-picture thinking, which requires holding a whole system in your head without getting lost in the detail. In reading people, situations, and rooms with an accuracy that others find unnerving.
This is not consolation. It's not “but you're so creative!” offered as a trade. It's cognitive research, and it describes a meaningfully different brain — one that trades automaticity in one narrow channel for unusual strength in several others.
The list of dyslexic architects, surgeons, filmmakers, engineers, and founders isn't an anomaly. It's a pattern. These are fields that reward exactly the kind of thinking dyslexic brains are disproportionately good at: spatial, systemic, narrative, improvisational. The detour, it turns out, was the scenic path. The people who had to find a different route ended up somewhere others couldn't reach.
The world you were measured against was built for one type of processing. You were always capable of something more interesting than that world knew how to test for.
Getting from the verdict to the truth
The first thing that changes things is simply having the right story. Not “I'm slow” but “I process written language differently and my brain built other routes that are genuinely strong.” Those are not the same sentence. One is a verdict. One is a description. For a lot of people, especially those who were diagnosed late or not at all, this reframe is the single most useful thing.
Beyond that, the defaults are not sacred. Audiobooks are not cheating. Text-to-speech is not cheating. Dictating instead of typing is not cheating. Asking someone to read something aloud is not cheating. The standard format got there first — that doesn't make it the only valid one. Accommodations exist because the measurement was always partial.
Practically: larger text and more line spacing help many dyslexic readers. Reading aloud to yourself, counterintuitively, helps too — it adds an audio channel to the visual one and reduces the load on phonological processing alone. What works is personal. The point is that adjusting the format isn't a workaround. It's just using the right tool.
If you're a parent reading this: the most protective thing you can do isn't to fix your child's reading before you've protected their relationship with learning. A child who believes they're capable and reads slowly will do better, long-term, than a child who reads adequately and has already decided they're broken. Get the support. But watch the story more carefully than the score.
Reading is a fight, for some brains. That part is true. The part that isn't true is the conclusion that was drawn from it.
